Artist Bio

BAM! is the resident performing ensemble of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, founded and directed by Lane Alexander.  The ensemble has an extensive repertory including the classics, contemporary jazz tap and experimental yet accessible rhythm expression like body drumming.  BAM! has performed at the 5th anniversary Beijing International Dance Festival, the Pritzker Pavilion in Chciago’s Millennium Park, and Dance for Life, to name a few.  Most recently, BAM! has collaborated with Broadway choreographer Ted Levy and sand dancer Guillem Alonso from Spain, and has been invited to perform in Spain, Venezuela, and China.

Artistic Statement

Chicago Human Rhythm Project has been providing educational experiences in Chicago for over 18 years and continues that work with its performing ensemble BAM! The group's vision is to teach an appreciation for the American art form of tap dance while at the same time demonstrating the idea that rhythm and rhythmic expression are innate human characteristics that can be found in every culture in the world.

Educational Philosophy

BAM believes that the best way for people to develop an appreciation for the art form and to ignite the imaginations of young people is to introduce it to them as early and as often as possible. Therefore, the group works to have year-round contact with people and communities throughout Chicago.
