Artist Statement
“Dr King, An Educated Man,” is a musical narrative (with some drama) that touches on the life and contributions of Civil Rights leader, Rev, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. While it's designed for young people in grammar and high school, the message and appeal of this piece is universal. Drawing from the main concepts of Dr. King’s legacy, the play attempts to highlight education, courage and love, focussing on the character needed to live these virtues even when challenged.
Dr King was a human being raised with a set of standards that propelled him to great heights. But had he not possessed a deep and abiding love for mankind along with extraordinary courage, he would have given up in the face of the vast and often devastating adversities that he and his co-laborers faced on their Civil Rights journey. This kind of service may be above and beyond the average person's journey, but it is not unattainable.
We suggest that belief underlies possibility. If you study and do your very best in school, have the courage to be different, and possess love, the opportunities are boundless. It’s all inside of you just waiting to be brought out.
