Artist Statement
To create is to make a point of appreciating what is already there. To grow as a creator is to take the time to value that which crosses your path no matter where you are. You must feel your subject, examine, study, and observe it. Only after this can you finally understand, interpret and translate it to the confines of a paper, or canvas or film. Nature has always been the source for my work. It provides an infinite wealth of beauty and through it I learn to appreciate so much more with each new visual work I create. Yet it was not until I began to work with children that I also began to realize the strength and power of listening to and incorporating the thoughts, questions and ideas of one’s inner world into art works. It is in my work and teaching that I strive to develop both: appreciating that which surrounds me as well as that which is within me.
