Join Urban Gateways for the screening of fourteen short films created by Chicago high school students during a 3-week intensive literary and media workshop offered by Urban Gateways and the School of the Art Institute. The films explore contemporary issues in race, class and gender. The workshop was part of Urban Gateways Art Options Program, a summer art apprenticeship program for middle and high school students.

Lakeside Bank is pleased to present VanderCook College of Music’s Graduate Band at the 5th Annual Concert in the Park on Tuesday, July 12th at the Women’s Park and Gardens behind the Clarke House Museum, 1827 S. Indiana. A family drum circle demonstration will begin at 6:30 PM followed by the concert at 7 PM.Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, pick a spot to sit, and listen to the sounds of famous marches, showtunes, movie themes, and concert band classics the whole family can enjoy. The concert is FREE and will benefit Parkways Foundation. The concert is done in partnership with the Chicago Park District, Greater South Loop Association, Near South Planning Board,Parkways Foundation, Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance and Urban Gateways. Piel Morena Contemporary Dance is proud to present ¡Se Feliz!, an enlightening and easy-to-understand hour length contemporary dance performance inspired by the book, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” a guide to daily happiness for kids by author Carol McCloud. The choreography for ¡Se Feliz! recognizes the problem of bullying. However, the piece encourages positive behaviors and focuses on values like: Friendship, kindness, tolerance, acceptance, appreciation and teamwork, as well as diversity. PMCD uses this story to educate children in schools throughout the Chicago land area about creating a healthy and safe environment for their lives and the lives of others around them. Children and adults have been moved by this inspiring performance, and it is sure to entertain and lighten the spirit of the entire family as it premiers on stage at the Vittum Theatre. Following the performance, there will be a question and answer session with the PMCD dancers.

The Gift from Patric McCoy to Samantha Hill Project is a Happening event consisting of a gift
which Patric McCoy (an alumnus of the University of Chicago, amateur photographer and
art collector from Hyde Park) gave to Samantha Hill. Patric’s gift is a conceptual self-portrait
consisting of 1500 images of the Black male subject in Chicago, the US, the Caribbean and
Zambia from 1980 to 1992.
McCoy gave Hill this gift with a set of instructions:
1. You can show them to anyone that you choose.
2. Show them in a dark room on a screen.
3. Play jazz in the background.
4. Have a discussion about significant events and experiences during the 80’s
Samantha Hill’s residency presentation is a creative response to Patric McCoy’s instructions

Young Sinbad, an orphaned porter, lives on the streets and relies on his clever wit to survive. The two meet by chance just before a bitter sorceress casts a poison cloud over the city of Baghdad. The unlikely duo soon find themselves facing good and evil genies, daring swordfights, magic boats and flying carpets. But can Sinbad and Ittifaq defeat the sorceress in time, or will their beloved city be destroyed forever?
