Imagination Salon 2009 - Can Creativity Be Taught

On October 8, 2009 at Chicago's Rowe Clark Math & Science Academy , Exelon and Urban Gateways brought together leaders in the fields of technology, education, business, and the arts for an in-depth panel discussion on the importance of creativity and innovation in the classroom and the role of arts education in the development of the future workforce. 

The moderator was internationally renowned arts education scholar Eric Booth; and the panel included:

  • Barbara T. Bowman, M.A. - Chief Officer, Early Childhood Education, Chicago Public Schools
     
  • Carol Forsyte- Corporate VP, Laws, Securities, Motorola 
     
  • Mohanbir Sawhney - McCormick Tribune Professor of Technology, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

Moderator and Panel Bios

Eric Booth (Moderator) is a decorated leader in arts learning and has held many prestigious  faculty positions in the field at establishments including: Stanford University, NYU, Tanglewood, Lincoln Center Institute, Leonard Bernstein Center, Kennedy Center and thirteen years at Juilliard where he co-Founded the Arts and Education program and the Mentoring Programs. He has been a chair of the Empire State Partnership and The College Board's Arts Advisory Committee.

Bowman is the Chief Officer of the Office of Early ChildhoodEducation for the Chicago Public Schools where, for the past 5 years, she has conducted programs for approximately 30,000 children.  Her experience includes teaching at preschool and primary levels, as well as in colleges and universities, and has published over 50 articles, book chapters, and edited volumes.

 

Carol Forsyte.jpgCarol Forsyte joined Motorola’s Law Department in 1995. She is Corporate Vice President, Law, Securities, based in Schaumburg, Illinois. Carol's responsibilities include advising on matters relating to securities laws, finance, corporate matters and transactions.  She also is a member of the Board of the Motorola Foundation and is a member of the Company’s Giving Committee. She graduated with a B.A. from Rutgers University, Douglass College and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

 

Mohanbir_Sawhney_webpic.jpgDr. Mohan Sawhney is a globally recognized scholar, teacher, consultant and speaker in strategic marketing, innovation and new media. Prof. Sawhney is the co-author of five books. His research has been published in leading journals like California Management Review, Harvard Business Review, and Journal of Interactive Marketing. Business Week named him as one of the 25 most influential people in e-Business and he was named a member of “40 under 40” by Crain’s Chicago Business.
