Matinee Performances
This season, Urban Gateways is again pleased to partner with the
Harris Theater for Music and Dance. Located
downtown in Chicago’s Millennium Park, this student matinee
series offers a variety of concerts by world-class performance companies.
An Urban Gateways matinee performance brings students from all
over the metropolitan area together to share in an unforgettable
experience.
Educational materials are provided for each performance and include
background information on the artists and the art form, ways to
extend the arts experience into the classroom, and curricular connections.
Matinee descriptions identify the Illinois Learning Standards addressed
in each performance using the symbols found below.
All performances are one hour in duration. Tickets are $7.00 each,
unless otherwise noted. One free chaperone ticket is issued with
every 15 student tickets purchased.
Tickets must be pre-paid and are non-refundable. Travel arrangements
to and from the matinee performance are the responsibility of each
school. Transportation is not included in the ticket price.

Luna Negra Dance Theater

Luna Negra Dance Theater performs works that explore the
diversity of Latino culture in a highly interactive program
where students get a “behind-the-scenes” look
at the creation and presentation of contemporary dance. Luna
Negra takes a fresh look at Latin dance with works that explore
and deconstruct traditional Latin dance movements into innovative
and original contemporary works. That works that will be performed
are “piel canela/cinnamon skin,” choreographed
by Septime Webre; “Flabbergast,” choreographed
by Gustavo Ramierz Sansano; and “CUGAT!” choreographed
by Eduardo Vilaro. The performances focus on the fusion of
African and European influences on Latino culture.

Garth Fagan Dance Company

most acclaimed African-American choreographers. Garth Fagan
has been called “one of the great reformers of American
dance.” Now in its 36th anniversary season, the Garth
Fagan Dance Company is renowned for its virtuosic dancing
and a distinctive quality of individuality among its dancers.

manner onstage, bringing elegance, poise to its original choreography.

Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre's
SHADOW OF THE BLUES AND A TRIBUTE TO NINA SIMONE

The Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre fuses contemporary dance,
live music, and art into multifaceted and innovative performances.
Through its versatility of style and theme that incorporates
jazz, classical, Latin, rock 'n' roll, and blues music with
that of ballet, jazz, and modern dance, the company has mastered
a style unique to themselves. In this program, the company
presents the Langston Hughes tribute "Shadow of the Blues"
features thirteen poems by Highest set to original jazz and
blues music and choreography and "A Tribute to Nina Simone,"
an electrifying homage to the priestess of soul.

the organizations performing at the Harris to attract broader,
larger, and more diverse audiences; encourage artistic synergy;
and increase opportunities to offer educational programs.
