Ella Jenkins and Urban Gateways featured in the New York Times
Unlike her fellow pioneers in arts and science, Ms. Ella Jenkins performs regularly, with a zeal unsurpassed by artists one-third her age. In February she released “A Life in Song” on Smithsonian Folkways Records, the same label on which she recorded her debut 55 years ago. And on Friday night she sang for her second favorite audience — adults, many of whom grew up on her records — at a gala for the 50th anniversary of Urban Gateways, the Chicago arts-education organization.

UG featured in new book on non-profit leverage
Urban Gateways is featured in the new book "The End of Fundraising: Raise More Money by Selling Your Impact"!
Why does it cost nonprofits on average $20 to raise $100, while it costs companies only $4? Simply put: Nonprofits have no leverage. No one has to make a donation. And since most donors have no direct stake in the organizations they support, they make donations out of the goodness of their hearts. If donors feel like writing a check, they will. If they don't, they won't. The End of Fundraising turns fundraising on its head, teaching nonprofits how to stop begging for charity and start selling impact.

Metlife Supports Urban Gateways Arts Wired
Urban Gateways received $50K in support from Metlife to develop its Arts Wired Communities (AWC) Initiative in the following Chicago neighborhoods: Pilsen, Woodlawn, Washington Park, South Chicago, Back of the Yards, Englewood, and Auburn Gresham. Specifically, local artists, cultural workers and community members will receive the training and opportunities necessary to engage fully in the planning and implementation of community development initiatives.
In early 2009, Urban Gateways (UG) adopted a new strategic plan which identified the development of community-based partnerships as a means of building the public will required to ensure high quality arts learning for all young people. UG’s success is directly reliant on its ability to earn and maintain the respect and trust of key community partner agencies, and to prepare locally-based artists to participate in and contribute to their communities’ overall improvement efforts, eventually establishing schools and community agencies as “arts-wired” cultural hubs and community learning centers.
The primary strategy for bringing the arts and education aspects of each community’s improvement plans to life has been UG’s full participation in the identification, design and implementation of neighborhood-based initiatives that address prioritized community issues. While this initially takes place as a result of UG staff and artists participating in ongoing neighborhood-based planning sessions at the invitation of the local community leaders, UG immediately fosters partnerships with neighborhood artists who must also assume a seat at the planning table. What frequently follows is the delivery of deeply-infused and customized arts-education programming, and the establishment of a cadre of locally-based artists who can ensure that arts learning remains embedded in holistic efforts at community change. Since artists have not customarily assumed this community-oriented responsibility, UG provides ongoing professional development.
The most significant investment in Chicago’s community development activities over the past 10 years has been the $47 million dedicated to the New Communities Program (NCP), a project of the Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC). As part of a larger national venture, 16 communities in Chicago received healthy infusions of capital in order to undertake asset-based planning processes that resulted in the publishing of each community’s Quality of Life Plan (QLP).
These plans represent a collaborative effort by neighborhood residents to identify and prioritize their community’s assets and needs. When UG recognized that each QLP held the arts and education up as essential components of its community’s overall health, yet had no means of realizing these aspirations, it reached out to many of the 14 lead agencies for the 16 LISC NCP regions. By engaging in efforts to operationalize the arts and education goals of each plan, UG could both contribute to a community’s progress and, at the same time, ensure access to high quality arts learning programs for young people, their parents and civic leadership.
In many cases, this meant building infrastructure, or neighborhood-based “cultural capital,” and capacity for local arts and education assets, including local artists. It is critical that schools in these neighborhoods have the support of greater community development efforts, and that local community-based artists are prepared to lead this charge, if equitable arts learning is to be sustained in each community. UG established its AWC Initiative as an attempt to contribute to the growth of each neighborhood’s cultural capital, and to tap into the deep well of artistic talent each of these communities possessed. Only when it is the expectation of community leadership that all improvement or development efforts include participation on the part of local artists if these plans are to be truly representative and successful, will cultural equity and access be achieved.

In The Classroom: Students Take Flight in Theatre Residency
In the Classroom is a new monthly feature created to take you inside a different Chicago-area classroom, introduce you to the Urban Gateways Teaching Artist who is working there, and share with you the experiences of the teaching artist and their students.
"Birds, Wings and Flying Things” – that’s the theme that the students of Hamilton School (K-8) have been exploring this year. It sounds like a science lesson, maybe even history, but it has also been the focus of a 20-week Urban Gateways Artist Residency at the school.
Hamilton is one of the schools that participate in Urban Gateways’ Cultural Education Program (CEP), which is a multi-year grant partnership between UG and selected schools through which students and teachers receive training in one of four specific arts disciplines each year: dance, music, theatre and visual arts. The goal is to give educators the tools to make connections between the fine and performing arts, social sciences and language arts.
This year, Hamilton students and teachers are exploring the discipline of theatre, and for the past few months, they’ve been doing so with Teaching Artist Maia Morgan.

Ballroom Dance-off Brings Students and Community Together
On Thursday, February 4, elementary students from Chavez Multicultural Academy – an Urban Gateways Community School – paired up and “Danced-Off” against students from five other schools in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The Dance-Off was the culmination of a four-month, after-school program called “Dancing with Class” – which focuses on building community bonds through the medium of social dance. Since October, the Chicago social dance studio May I Have This Dance has provided weekly lessons at all six elementary schools. Then the students came together for a final Dance-Off, in which partnered with both their classmates AND with dancers from the other schools.
“We have a fundamental belief in the power of social dance to build and strengthen communities, to bring people of all socio-economic backgrounds together, to do something that brings joy and strengthens respect for self and others,” said Margot Toppen from May I Have This Dance.

From the middle of the room, she suddenly shouts, “You’re in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Within seconds, the room is silent, each child frozen in a pose – some are marching in a band, some are waving to people lining the streets, others are desperately trying to hold on to giant balloons floating high above their heads. Despite Funding Cuts, Devoted Arts Leaders Persevere
In these tough economic times, the traditional sources of funding for arts education are ebbing, but dedicated supporters are still finding ways to keep their fine arts programs afloat.
In April, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) announced that it was cutting Title I funding for fine arts, which impacted many programs including an Urban Gateways project with its non-profit partner The Fran Center. UG had spent months organizing arts programming for the nonpublic schools that the Center serves, and we were relying on the Title I funding (annually allocated for schools serving low-income areas) to support those programs.

Collaboration. Creation. Celebration. Urban Gateways artists brought new meaning to these words through their innovative work at Cicero. "In ancient times, the arts brought us together as communities, which made us better teams and stronger hunters. We don't need to bond together as hunter-gatherers and yet our need for connection is as strong as ever. The desire for art is as strong as ever," stated John Knecht, Urban Gateways teaching artist. This quote was the guiding thought for a room of 28 Cicero District visual art and music teachers on a cold Friday morning.

During this program, kindergarten through third grade students meet with different Urban Gateways artists each morning of the week to partake in arts learning well before the school day begins. On December 17, teaching artists and students came together to give a culminating performance for a proud audience of parents and Greeley staff members.
